Elder Mediation is a service carried out by professionals who are trained and knowledgeable in both Mediation and Gerontology/Aging. They understand the unique situation of Seniors, family members, and caregivers which arise due to aging, and how these produce concerns which need the services of a Mediator.
Mediation is a method of dispute resolution so generally arises from conflicts or impasses. It helps clients identify and define problems in a way that can lead them to finding solutions or defining and developing a course of action on which they all agree. This may also result in, or include, facilitating communication, understanding and trust between the parties involved.
Mediation and counselling are in many ways very similar depending on the practitioner and their methods and training. One difference is that mediation tends to be of a shorter duration—typically one to three sessions--and does not have a goal of self growth, by those involved. Mediation often involves multiple parties and they may not be related whereas counselling is more individual, couple or family. Mediation, may, of course also be just for family members. Mediation also tends to focus on the here and now in order to develop solutions. Mediation is often used as a “last resort,” before the involved parties go into legal proceedings.
